Following the agitation over which zone produces the next Governor of Abia State, Governor Okezie Ikpeazu’s ally and chieftain of the party, Chief Charles Ogbonna, has threatened to mobilize support and vote against the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP if the governor insists on handing over to any of his Ngwa kinsman from Abia Central zone.
He stated that it is the turn of Abia North zone to produce Ikpeazu’s successor in 2023 and urged the governor to choose somebody from the zone to emerge as candidate.

Ogbonnaya, who is a former Commissioner for Trade and Investment in the state, had sparked controversy over a video where he was seen pouring libation threatening that no Ngwa man will become governor in 2023.

He disclosed that he warned Ikpeazu against handing over to his kinsman when the Governor invited him to his residence and informed him about where his successor would come from.

He said; “When the governor invited me to his house to tell me that he wants to have the governorship remain in Umunneato which is Osisioma, Isiala Ngwa North and Isiala Ngwa South , I told him no, it is wrong for him to do that. It is the turn of Abia North. All you need to do is to look for somebody in Abia North to become governor. After 8 years, it will return to Abia Central. Ikpeazu will not remain governor forever; all he needs to do is to hand over to somebody from Abia North for peace to reign. It is good for him because he will soon leave office. This is my advice. As  a governor, he is powerful, he has the money. The delegate will also obey him.Im not forcing him, but there is something that will happen during the general election, because I will come out and campaign against the PDP.

“Now my brothers in Abia Central of Ngwa extraction  will now contest with Umuahia axis to say when it came first to Abia central, you took first , now allow us , we will concede. If you are in a position of authority, appoint advisers that will advise you and not advisers that you will advise. And that is exactly what is going on with my friend the Governor. Ikpeazu is my brother from another mother, he is my friend. I will continue advising him because I know what he is doing is wrong. Naturally the next Governor should come from Abia North.”

Ogbonna insisted that he has many friends from Ngwa and does not hate anybody from the area, but vowed to ensure that no Ngwa son emerges Governor in 2023.

“I have many friends in Ngwa and I don’t hate them. I may have made a mistake when I was pouring libation, but I mean in 2023, no Ngwa man will be Governor. I still maintain it and I will work hard to make sure that no Ngwa man becomes Governor come 2023, there is no going back to that.”

The PDP chieftain also stated that he had advised the Governor’s alleged anointed candidate, Prof. Uche Ikonne, against his ambition for governor in 2023.

“Prof. Ikonne came here with his brother, said he was consulting, he wants to become Governor; I said, which Governor? To do what? What are you going to do? Ikonne is not a party man and does not know what politics entails.  Abia Charter of Equity demands that power should move to Abia North in 2023.”
