Bandits have reportedly kidnapped 12 persons on their way to a traditional marriage ceremony at Okigwe, a boundary town between Imo and Abia states.
The victims traveling in a bus were said to have been kidnapped along the Umuahia – Okigwe section of the Port Harcourt – Enugu expressway.
It was gathered that the kidnapped victims were on their way to the traditional marriage ceremony of their son, when they ran into the bandits.
After leading the victims into the bush, the bandits were said to have released the driver of the bus and the aged women who returned to disclose the sad news to the community.
According to a source; “Our people were on their way to a traditional marriage when their bus ran into an ambush by the kidnappers who were shooting on the Umuahia – Okigwe expressway. They escaped from the first set but didn’t know that there were other boys in front. This was how they were kidnapped into the bush. The kidnappers later released the elderly women and asked them to go home and inform their people to bring money.”
Spokesman of the Abia State Police Command, SP Geoffrey Ogbonna, said he is not aware of the kidnap incident.
