Commuters are lamenting the nightmare at Amansea town along the old Enugu-Onitsha Road, while pleading with Gov. Willie Obiano of Anambra state to save motorists from the horror.

The outcry was due to the total failure of both the Enugu-Onitsha Dual Carriage Way and the old road at Amansea, a distance of less than 6km from the Government House, Awka.

One of the commuters who did not want his name in print said on Saturday, “If the Federal Government couldn’t rehabilitate or reconstruct these very important axis or spot of the roads for easy flow of motor vehicular traffic, why can’t the Anambra state government?

“Anambra state government can rehabilitate this shorter than 6km stretch of the road. It will save people the harrowing, excruciating and disgusting experience of having to be entrapped in so many hours without ending gridlock in the area

“It has become a nightmare passing through Amansea while making any trip either from Anambra state to Enugu state or vice versa nowadays, using that route.

“Where’s Gov. Willie Obiano? He should rise quickly to this occasion.”

Yet another said, “And to Works Minister Babatunde Fashola, why can’t the federal government rehabilitation of the roads be completed yet?

“Why is the dual carriage way which began with the rehabilitation of one-lane in 2015 yet to be completed? The rehabilitation of the axis running from Obunofia Ezeagu through Ugwuoba in Enugu state and Amansea up to Awka in Anambra State has been abandoned for a very long time now.

“It’s the same way that Anambra state government abandoned the Achina-Ogboji Road, a 6km Road, which construction the governor flagged off shortly on his assumption of office in his first term and several other roads in various communities in the state.”

“Please do we still have a government in Anambra state?” One of them who almost slept on the road at Amansea, a boundary town with Enugu state queried.

During the inauguration of the construction work, Governor Obiano explained that because of the agrarian nature of these areas and its economic importance to the state his government was embarking on the road construction for easy evacuation of farm produce from the areas.

He promised to complete the construction 12 months after the inauguration. The condition of the roads is a pitiable experience to varous communities, predominantly farmers.

Mr James Nnaji, a commercial driver appealed to Gov. Willie Obiano to quickly repair the failed spots of the Enugu-Onitsha routes at Amansea.

He should also complete the construction of the Achina-Ogboji Road and others ahead of Nov. 6 guber election to keep his words.

“Doing so will by extension save the people the trouble of having to be going full clockwise through four or five other towns before getting to each other, when they share common boundaries and have a university being established in the area by the Roman Catholic Church,” he said. ###
