Yet to be identified assailants on Sunday attempted to raze down the office of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Ahiazu Mbaise in Imo State.

Though they succeeded to throw in an ignited tyre, heavy downpour stopped the intended damage.

The assailants had ignited a condemned tyre and threw it into the Ahiazu Mbaise office of INEC, an action that resulted in burnt windows.

However according to INEC’s Head of Voter Education and Publicity in the state, Emmanuella Ben- Opara, the heavy downpour quenched the fire saying it did not cause collateral damage.

Already “A part of the Conference Room was burnt, window protectors destroyed and Alumaco windows smashed”, according to her.

According to her, the incident was a clear case of “Attempted arson presumably in the early hours of Sunday 23rd May, 2021”.

Meanwhile the incident has been reported to the Ahiazu Mbaise Police Division for further investigation.
