A former senator representing Anambra south and an aspirant in the November governorship election in Anambra state, Dr Andy Uba has blamed his political detractors for the alleged secret marriage between him and Honourable Nnenna Ukeje, a former member of the House of Representatives.
The senator has also vowed to sue and online newspaper, the publisher of the trending story if it fails to pull down the news and put up a retraction immediately.
In a statement issued by Segun Fiki, from Ojukwu Chikaosolu law firm,
on his behalf, Senator Uba said, “It has come to our client’s attention that some ailing peddlers of falsehood masquerading as news media have embarked on an orchestrated campaign of calumny aimed at tarnishing his unblemished reputation. To this end, these nondescript publications, one of which describes itself as The Capital (www.thecavital.ng) on 14! May 2021 scandalously published a news item with the title “Finally, Andy Uba Marries Nnenna Ukeje”. Amongst other things, the publication alleges that our client secretly wedded Hon. Nnenna Ukeje after a “decade-long relationship”. Several other shadowy blogs and online publications have circulated this blatant falsehood obtained from www.theca tital.ne.
“These unfounded reports are clearly the handiwork of political detractors who are obviously envious of our client’s unmatched acceptability and immense political profile across Anambra State and beyond. In their desperation to denigrate the person of our client and to destabilize his family, these political hecklers and jobbers have resorted to sponsoring asinine slanderous reports against him.”
The statement further stated, “For the avoidance of doubt, the report that our client secretly wedded Hon. Nnenna Ukeje is false, unfounded, malicious and devoid of any modicum of truth. Indeed, it is the figment of the fecund imagination of these mushroom publications and their desperate collaborators.
“Our client is busy preparing to heed the call of millions of Anambra indigenes who have urged him to contest the gubernatorial primaries of the All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the forthcoming Anambra Gubernatorial election scheduled for November 2021. This is the first step in his avowed determination to bring the dividends of democracy and to provide succour to the good people of Anambra State. Consequently, no matter the barrage of fake news conjured up against him by purveyors of falsehood, he will not be distracted or deterred in this singular task.
“Our position on the above is clear: the ill-intentioned actions of these ailing news platforms against the person of our client are consistent with all the ingredients of defamation known to our laws. These actions have disparaged our client and inflicted grave opprobrium on his person and family.
“Our client demands the immediate deletion of this false report published by The Capital (www.theca:ital.n-) and all other associated platforms as well as the publication of a full retraction of the story in a prominent part of all such platforms, failing which we shall take far-reaching steps to obtain legal redress to the fullest extent of the law at the appropriate judicial fora.”
