The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Abia State chapter has said that at least 3 medical doctors leave the state for better opportunities abroad monthly.
Chairman of NMA, Abia State chapter, Dr Chimezie Okwuonu, who disclosed this at the celebration of his 6 years of stewardship, lamented that the situation was impacting negatively on the health care system in the state.
He urged the state government to address the issues of the welfare of doctors at the Abia State University Teaching Hospital (ABSUTH), Aba; and the Health Management Board,(HMB) who are on strike over unpaid arrears of salaries
Okwuonu linked the exodus of medical doctors from the state to the problem of unpaid salaries and work environment which the NMA has complained about.
He urged the state government to pay more attention to health care delivery system in the state to check the increasing exodus of medical personnel.
“Two to three doctors leave Abia every month for Saudi Arabia where they are paid about six times their salary per month.
“Regular payment of salaries will help reduce brain drain among doctors. We need the political will and commitment to move the health sector forward.”
Okwuonu called for the release of the Provost of the College of Medicine, Gregory University, Uturu, (GUU), Dr. Uwadinachi Iweha, who was kidnapped two months ago by unknown gunmen, who still hold him despite payment of ransom.
