Nwachukwu, who represented Abia North senatorial district from 1999 to 2003, explained that a Lagos based businessman, Prince Odinaka Igwe from Isuochi has visited him at his Lagos residence accompanied by the PDP candidate who sought his blessings.
The retired General said he had no problem giving his blessings to Ikonne as he does to other businessmen and politicians who had approached him for such, but denied endorsing Ikonne for the governorship position.
“My attention has been drawn to the story, making the rounds in social media that I endorsed a gubernatorial candidate. Prince Odinaka Igwe, an Isuochi politician and a Lagos-based businessman visited me in my Lagos residence in the evening of Saturday, 25th June, 2022. He came with Prof Uche Ikonne, former Vice Chancellor of Abia State University and now PDP 2023 Gubernatorial candidate. A member of the Abia State House of Assembly from Ukwa East also accompanied them. It was purely a private visit. And without the media.
“Prof Ikonne, of course, mentioned that he is running for the office of Governor of Abia State. He asked for my blessing. As it is in the Igbo tradition for an elder statesman to bless anyone who embarks on a life’s journey, I blessed Uche Ikonne. Many in politics, business and other human endeavours come to me for such blessings and have received them measuredly. All those contesting elective and others offices and stations in life who seek my blessings will not be denied such blessings. I never endorsed him.”
He urged the people of the state to elect only credible persons who have shown capacity to develop the story.
“May I therefore use this medium to urge the good people of Abia to elect only credible and capable leaders, who have shown capacity and that have the capacity to represent us well and to develop our State which is abysmally under developed.”
