The sleepy Umuorie community in Ukwa West LGA of Abia State is boiling over the murder of a tipper driver by unknown gunmen.
Community sources told Pointblanknews.com that the victim identified as Israel Nwobilo, was kidnapped with his assistant driver on Saturday, June 18 when they went to carry sand from a site at Umukalu community.
However, he was found dead a day later at a bush area of the community.
The youths had embarked on a search around the bush where they later discovered the lifeless body of the victim.
Angered by the development, youths went on rampage parading the victim’s corpse to Obehie town to register their grievances.
The youths were said to have tied the corpse to wooden poles and marching through the streets of Obehie, chanting war songs.
“Israel Nwobilo who is a tipper driver went to a sand excavation site at Umukalu community to get sand but he was kidnapped with his conductor by unknown gunmen.
“But the conductor escaped from the kidnappers’ den and informed the community people on how they were kidnapped at Umukalu.The discovery of the corpse caused tension in the Umuorie community. The youths spoiled for war as they could not understand how Israel could be kidnapped and killed in his community,” the source said.
Efforts to get the reaction of the Police Public Relations Officer, Abia State Command, SP Geoffrey Ogbonna, was unsuccessful as he neither responded to calls or text message placed on his handset.
