The struggle for the control of the Abia State chapter of the All Progressive Congress, (APC) may not be over soon as the party has berated the Chief Whip of the Senate; Senator Orji Uzor Kalu over the list the lawmaker had drawn a list of those qualified as delegates to the March 26, 2022 national convention of the party.
Pointblanknews.Com learnt that the APC in Abia is divided between the mainstream Chief Ikechi Emenike and Senator Orji Uzor Kalu factions. The Emenike faction is recognized by the national leadership of the party.
Pointblanknews.com further learnt that Kalu had drawn a letter where he listed some names as would –be delegates to the party’s national convention.
Reacting to Kalu’s letter, State Publicity Secretary, Chief Okey Ezeala, explained that article 12.1 of APC Constitution is clear about the statutory delegates to the national convention as the party does not need open letters to remind it on how delegates emerge.
Ezeal said that the APC Constitution allows only members of the party to emerge delegates which would be determined by the state party register.
He explained that the party conducted a highly publicized nationwide membership registration and revalidation exercise in 2021 to the benefit of party loyalists and members of the public, but alleged that some political merchants with the aim of hijacking the party disregarded the opportunity and lost their membership status.
“Abia APC is one family and we respect Senator Orji Kalu and indeed every other politician’s right to associate with friends, political allies and choice structure, but it is imperative to note that the party’s constitution allows only members of the APC as delegates to the national convention, of which the party’s membership register in Abia will determine – not by supposedly big names, office or social status.
“The Party conducted a nationwide membership registration and revalidation exercise as early as last year with enough timeline and media publications to the benefit of party loyalists and interesting members of the public – yet some political merchants with the aim of hijacking the party disregarded the opportunity, thereby losing their membership status till today.
“The convention of 26th March, 2022 is a child of destiny and those who couldn’t abort it are relentless in all subterfuge to create imaginary relevance.”
