Gunmen attack Abia Cattle market, kill 8 persons, 50 cows

Gunmen yesterday invaded the Abia Cattle market at Omuma Uzor in Ukwa LGA, kill about 50 cows and 8 persons.

The Cattle dealers had two weeks ago relocated to the market after the demolition of the Waterside cattle market in Aba.

Sources from the Omuma Uzor community told Pointblanknews.com that 8 persons lost their lives while about 50 cows were killed. Many traders were said to have also sustained injuries as the gunmen damaged properties on sight.

Abia State Commissioner for Information, Dr. Eze Chikamnayo who confirmed the attack, stated that the state government is working to fish out the perpetrators of the attack.

Government begins relocation of traders after attack

Following the attack on the cattle market, the Abia state government has immediate relocation of the traders from the market.

A statement from the Commissioner for Information further disclosed that the government was working out compensation for the victims of the attack.

The Commissioner who said the State Government would take care of the medical bills of the injured traders, condoled with the family of those killed during the attack.

“On Tuesday, 15th February, 2022 at about 11:35pm, some yet to be identified hoodlums allegedly invaded traders at the New Cattle Market located in Omuma Uzor, Ukwa West Local Government Area. Government responded swiftly by mobilizing the various security agencies to the scene to secure the lives and properties of the innocent traders and fish out the assailants.

“This was followed this morning by a high powered team made up of the Chief of Staff, Prof Anthony Agbazuere; Commissioner for Trade and Investment, Chief John Okiyi Kalu; Commissioner for Homeland Security; Mr. Sopuruchi Nwabeke; Chairman of Ukwa West LGA, Chief Okey Kanu and the State Commissioner of Police, Mrs Janet Agbede.

“We are shocked and saddened by this mindless  and barbaric act of violence  that claimed the lives of about  8 innocent  citizens of our great country and we totally condemn this dastardly act together with its wicked perpetrators.

“We are working assiduously to provide succor to the families of the victims. Those who sustained injuries are currently receiving medical attention. We have equally started the immediate relocation  of the traders while working out compensation for lost properties. We shall leave no stone to ensure that the evil perpetrators are brought to justice.

“While waiting for the outcome of ongoing investigations by our diligent Security Forces, the Governor of Abia State,  Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu together with all Abians pray for God to grant the families of victims the fortitude to bear this irreparable  loss.

“We urge all Citizens of our great Country in Abia State to remain law abiding and promptly report any suspicious movements to the appropriate authorities.”
