Tragedy was averted at the Osisioma Ngwa Local Government Area secretariat, Osisioma, Abia State, as the thugs said to be working for the chairman of the Local Government, Chief Christian Kamalu, stopped a Non Governmental Organization (NGO), Each One Aid One Foundation, from distributing free Joint Admission and Matriculation Board(JAMB) forms to indigent students in the area.
Sources told Pointblanknews.com that the Foundation sponsored by a businessman, Engr. Nana Nwafor, who hails from Osisioma Ngwa LGA, has not had any hitch since it started visiting the 17 LGAs in the state, distributing free JAMB forms to the indigent students, until it got to Osisioma Ngwa LGA.
Hardly had the team arrived the council secretariat and made to address the students when the thugs threatened them to leave the premises or be thrown out. They were heard telling the Foundation that they have orders from the chairman of the council, Chief Christian Kamalu, not to allow the event hold at the premises. Appeal by the Foundation that they had approval to hold the event at the council secretariat fell on deaf ears as this infuriated some of the thugs who starting hit the vehicles belonging to the Foundation. As at the time of the incident, the council chairman was said to be in his office, but did nothing to quell the situation.
As the thugs continued their threats to destroy the vehicles of the Foundation, information got to Engr. Nwafor, who directed his team to leave the council secretariat and look for another venue. The Foundation later relocated to the Osisioma Ngwa Youth Congress Hall where the event was held.
Pointblanknews.com gathered that there is no love lost between the council chairman, Chief Kamalu and the proprietor of the Foundation, Engr. Nwafor, who is believed to be interested in the Abia governorship position in 2023. Engr. Nwafor is the son of the former Deputy Governor of Abia State, Dr. Chima Nwafor, who served in both Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu and Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu administrations.
According to a chieftain of the PDP in Osisioma Ngwa LGA who pleaded anonymity,” The Foundation has been going round the 17 LGAs distributing free JAMB forms to indigent students, but when they came to Osisioma Ngwa LGA which is the home of the owner of the Foundation, the council chairman, Christian Kamalu and his thugs vowed that it won’t hold at the secretariat. This is purely a humanitarian venture meant to assist indigent students but the council chairman has introduced politics into it. Why did other LGA chairman not stop it from holding at their secretariats? What has Christian Kamalu done for Osisioma Ngwa people since he became chairman? We have only seen him promote thuggery to molest people. Recently, Christian Kamalu went and disrupted an election to elect a tradition ruler for a community and declared his choice candidate who was not the people candidate. Osisioma Ngwa people are tired of his resorting to thugs to settle every matter. Kamalu has been an absentee chairman, after his swearing-in as chairman; he spent three months in America. Even if Engr. Nana Nwafor is interested in the 2023 governorship election, is it enough for the council chairman to stop him from extending the free JAMB forms to students in Osisioma Ngwa LGA? What crime did Engr. Nwafor commit by using his money to help the poor students? It is unfortunate that our people play politics with everything.”
Efforts to get Kamalu’s reaction to the incident were unsuccessful as at the time of filing this report.
